The vagus nerve is blowing my mind right now. Here are 10 amazing facts about this incredible nerve:

  • it’s the 10thcranial nerve. It passes through the abdomen, diaphragm, lungs, throat, inner ear, and facial muscles

  • it’s the primary communicator between the brain, heart and digestive organs

  • When stimulated, the vagus nerve inhibits the nervous systems’ stress response

  • Proper stimulation of the vagus nerve can improve depression and anxiety, relieve inflammation, improve sleep, reduce allergies, and reduces stress.

  • ‘Vagal tone’ is a good thing- it indicates healthy functioning nervous system. Healthy vagal tone is measured by the heart-rates’ responsiveness to changes in breathing rate – People with higher HRV can move more easily from excitement to relaxation and can recover more easily from stress.

  • 90% of the nerve fibers that exist throughout the stomach and intestines connect back to the brain via the vagus nerve. This is known as the ‘gut brain’.

  • Improve your Vagus Nerve’s tone with yoga, mindfulness, somantic awareness, conscious breathing

  • Other less obvious ways to tone it is through humming, singing, smiling, cuddling, socialising and cold showers!

  • The vagus nerve keeps your immune system in check and releases an assortment of hormones and enzymes such as acetylcholine and oxytocin. This results in reductions in inflammation, improvements in memory, and feelings of relaxation.

  • Awareness and mastery over the biofeedback of brain-heart-breathing via the vagus nerve allows you to access flow-state
